Weather, when to go, What to wear, visa and passport information, and health risks
Weather in KenyaIt's generally sunny, dry, and not too hot for most of the year in Kenya even though it's on the equator. The main rainy seasons are from March to May and November to December but the amount of rainfall varies every year. Central Kenya is on a plateau and the altitude keeps the heat at a comfortable level. The coast is hotter, but the ocean breeze also makes that region more comfortable for most of the year. Mount Kenya has permanent snow and it often freezes at night. Western Kenya is generally hot and humid and Northern Kenya is generally hot and dry.
When to Go
The main tourist season is from January to February, when the weather is driest and the animals in wildlife parks gather in rivers, so they are easier to spot. However, hotels and other places might get crowded, and it might be harder to get flights. Avoid Christmas and Easter, since everything has a higher price during that time.

What to Wear
Keep in mind Kenya is a developing country, so try not to take very expensive or flashy items, as they might get stolen. Also, people in Kenya dress conservatively, so shorts or short skirts are frowned upon, however, it is unlikely that anyone could comment on what you wear, and in places frequented by tourists, locals are used to other types of clothing.
This is what you should pack on your trip to Kenya:
- Sunglasses, since good sunglasses are very expensive in Kenya
- A hat against sun strokes
- White or other light colored clothes
- Something to carry bottles of water in (you’ll need to drink a lot of water in this weather and tap water is never safe)
- One really warm sweater, as nights can be cold
- Swimming clothes, as Kenya has over 500 kilometers of white sand beaches, as well as plastic sandals for walking on reefs
- A raincoat, especially during the rainy seasons
